Dead - No Picture
Is Repair Practical?
The first step in assessing your TV is to determine if a CRT (Picture Tube) is defective or if there is some other defect that can be repaired for reasonable cost. If your picture was normal before a No Picture condition, most likely CRTs are OK. Most likely there is a convergence, power supply, or high voltage/deflection problem Convergence Failure Visible before No Picture Condition The most common cause of Rear Projector - Won't start, is convergence circuit failure. If symptoms or faults similar to the images in the Convergence Gallery were present or visible before the Shutdown condition occurred, you most likely have a convergence circuit failure. Non-working convergence adjustment also confirms a convergence failure. On-site Troubleshooting to confirm convergence failure costs $30 to $60 extra and is not available in all areas. Power Supply, High Voltage and Other Problems Power Supplies, Horizontal and Vertical deflection failures are also cause of Dead or No Picture conditions. High Voltage transformer or triplers typically cost from $80 to $150, depending on the model. ICs, transistors or other specific parts typically cost from $20 to $100 and may have to be ordered for your TV. On-site Troubleshooting to identify power supply, Deflection faults costs $30 to $60 extra and is not available in all areas. Picture Tube Failure There are 3 Picture Tubes in CRT Rear Projection TVs. Red, Green and Blue. Each tube produces an image that is projected on the screen from the rear. When all three CRTs are working correctly a normal picture is displayed. SYMPTOMS of a Defective CRT:
If a CRT or Picture Tube is defective, the cost of repair is unreasonable. Reliability of the repair becomes an issue. CRT replacement usually requires further visits for alignment as the new tube burns in. The other tubes may be unreliable if one is defective. If your picture was normal before a No Picture condition, most likely CRTs are OK. On-site Troubleshooting is available in Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto and London service areas. |
